Traditionally carved by a man for his sweetheart these spoons have many different meanings such as a chain meaning a wish to be together forever; a diamond means good fortune; a cross for faith; a flower for affection; a dragon for protection etc. I carve lovespoons in many different designs: to see some examples click on the pictures above. To order a love spoon or request a commission please either use the paypal buttons (I accept all major credit/debit cards), phone me on 07761596616 or send a personal cheque to Adam King, 43 Watchet Lane, Holmer Green, High Wycombe, HP15 6UF or email me for enquiries . All spoons are priced individually - add £3 for postage (UK) or £5 for the rest of the world. Many of the spoons I have in stock and can be posted to you quickly. If I do not have one ready made then I will carve you one within 2 - 3 weeks. If you need a spoon urgently then please let me know as I can usually find time to carve one sooner. I specialise in carving individual commissions.
Firstly, the wood around the design is removed with a fretsaw. This is commonly known as piercing |
The back of the spoon bowl is rounded with a miniature spokeshave. |
Although I have over 100 different chisels I tend to usually only use about 20. Most of these are gouges |
The carving continues |
The carving is nearly complete apart from the fine detail which will be added later. |
The finish of a lovespoon is very important. On average at least 1/3 of the time spent making a spoon is spent sanding. |
The spoon is given one last sanding with very fine sandpaper before carving the fine detail and having its final finish applied. (right) , the finished spoon |
Unlike some contempory carvers who use tropical hardwoods such as mahogany, all my spoons are carved from lime, a traditional indigenous wood used by British woodcarvers for many centuries. It is a light coloured wood that will darken with age. All my spoons are finished to a very high standard.
